The Quest

Within the framework of the simple living lifestyle, how can we best utilize the teachings of positive psychology to achieve happiness and flourishing lives?

Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is often referred to as "the science of happiness." Leading researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky describes happiness as “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.”

The more I learn about positive psychology, the more I am convinced of its tremendous potential. Potential to transform individuals and societies. Potential to steer humanity into a new era, an era that pays homage to this statement:

Every human being, whether living now or in a future generation, should be afforded the opportunity to live a meaningful, happy, and fulfilling life.

Simple Living

Simple living is better for everyone. You can improve your own life and help improve the lives of others, not just for our generation, but for future generations as well.

In his essay “Voluntary Simplicity: The Poetic Alternative to Consumer Culture,” Samuel Alexander, defines simple living as “a post-consumerist living strategy that rejects the materialistic lifestyle of consumer culture and affirms what is often just called ‘the simple life,’ or ‘downshifting.’”

The simple living lifestyle relies on the practice of minimalism. Quoting The Minimalists, “Minimalism is a tool used to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and freedom.” In other words, minimalism is a tool used to simplify your life, i.e., achieve a simple living lifestyle.

Positive psychology is the perfect science to enhance the simple living lifestyle. Simple living needs positive psychology.

Do you need a compelling reason to embrace the simple living lifestyle? Consider ecological harmony. And now that climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, voluntary simplicity has become a moral imperative and a global responsibility.

Simple living could save our planet.

Justice

Every human being, whether living now or in a future generation, should be afforded the opportunity to live a meaningful, happy, and fulfilling life.

Positive psychology and minimalism are rooted in the same soil; both gather their nutrients from altruism, the principle and practice of concern for the welfare of others.
